Child Education Support

ASDHI seeks to increase the number of children in fishing communities that enroll and complete primary education, particularly girls, orphans and vulnerable children. It therefore engages with children, teachers, school leaders, local government officials, parents/guardians and communities to create awareness about factors that limit access to education, influence irregular school attendance and lead to dropout. ASDHI advocates for and supports parental involvement in children’s education, improving school infrastructures, providing textbooks, peer and sex education in schools, sports development and providing scholarship opportunities for the Orphaned and Vulnerable Children (OVCs).  Since  many indigent and orphaned girls cannot afford to buy sanitary products and simply decide to skip school for a number of days during their menstruation period, ASDHI provides them with sanitary pads. To sustain and strengthen positive education outcomes, ASDHI equips school leaders with skills and knowledge for

  • Improving student learning.
  • Supporting, evaluating and developing teacher quality
  • Setting goals/targets assessment and accountability
  • Collaborating with other schools and
  • Effective human and financial management

Functional Adult Literacy (FAL)

Part of the reason why some parents and guardians in fishing communities don’t value their children’s education is because most of them dropped out or have never been to school. To accelerate the community development process, adults that dropped out of or have never been to school are equipped with Functional Adult Literacy (FAL) skills and knowledge. FAL sessions entail linking beneficiaries to other social service and educating them about HIV, succession planning and human rights. FAL participants learn how to read, write, count, assert their rights, access written information and effectively plan for themselves and their families.
